AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY'S CINCINNATI HOPE LODGE

The volunteers and staff of the American Cancer Society, Ohio Division Hamilton County Unit are launching a major campaign to construct an American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Cincinnati. The Hope Lodge is a short-term residential facility designed to offer housing, counseling, and referral services free of charge to any patient receiving outpatient oncology treatment at hospitals in the Cincinnati area. The Cancer Resource Center is an administrative facility offering educational, patient services and support programs.

Patients often spend weeks, sometimes months, away from home for treatment. For such patients and their families, the Cincinnati Hope Lodge is designed to be a home away from home, providing a supportive and end encouraging environment specially adapted to their needs. The location of the Hope Lodge allows easy access to major cancer treatment facilities, as well as pharmacies and shopping districts.

Multiple suites with private baths, the Cincinnati Hope Lodge will also provide a community dining area and several kitchens. Family room areas, laundry rooms, a library, and recreation areas offer additional comforts of home.

In tandem with the Cincinnati Hope Lodge a Cancer Resource Center for Southwest Ohio will be built. The center will provide free community resources of cancer and wellness information as well as support groups. This center is open to all cancer patients regardless of whether they are residents in the Hope Lodge. This facility will serve as a home to American Cancer Society staff and volunteers to coordinate its community programs in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Cancer Resource Center will also serve as a training and meeting place and a venue to hold educational seminars. Contingent on a July 2002 groundbreaking, the Hope Lodge would be scheduled to open in early 2004.

Long-term benefits to be expected from the Cincinnati Hope Lodge/Cancer Resource Center include:

-Established psychosocial support networks for patients and their families

-Immediate access to patient services offered by the American Cancer Society

-Increased awareness and visibility for American Cancer Society activities

-Improved quality care for cancer patients

-Increased information and guidance to facilitate patient's decision making ability

-Space for training programs, support groups, and meetings

-A focus resource of cancer information/patient services
